Russell in talks for 'Django Unchained'

Kurt Russell is in negotiations to join the cast of Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," a role Kevin Costner was originally expected to take before scheduling conflicts arose. He joins a cast that already includes Jaime Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson. Story follows a slave-turned-bounty hunter (Foxx) on a mission to rescue his wife from her sadistic slavemaster. Production is expected to start this November with the Weinstein Co. slating the pic for a Dec. 25, 2012, domestic bow. Stacey Sher, Pilar Savone and Reginald Hudlin will produce. Harvey Weinstein, Michael Shamberg and Jim Skotchdopole are exec producing. Russell had previously worked with Tarantino on "Death Proof," the second pic in the double feature "Grindhouse" that Tarantino directed and like this film Russell also played the villain. This will also mark Russell's return to the western genre; he had previously played Wyatt Earp in "Tombstone." He is repped by CAA. Contact Justin Kroll at justin.kroll@variety.com
