Hollywood has its own crosses to bare

The Passion of the Christ made an impact and big bucks worldwide. Now that the "war on Christmas" has been declared, it's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.I never quite figured out what that "war" was all about, but the talkshows dote on it and Rick Perry complains that the mere act of throwing a Christmas party invites a media firestorm. Most of the Fox News pundits agree with him, thus spurring Jon Stewart to declare his personal (and presumably facetious) war on Christmas. Most of us steer clear of Christmas controversies, but they confront us in specific areas. Should our cards explicitly wish friends a Merry Christmas, or duck into the blur of "happy holidays"? The corporate HR types urge a blur but a minority of folks still go for Christmas (including Jerry Bruckheimer, but he's a Republican so it doesn't count).I checked into my own cards and they are 50-50, but I don't know whether this reflects political correctness or disorganization. All this is relevant to Hollywood because it has long had a vested interest in Christ, from the days of Cecil B. DeMille to Mel Gibson. Only last week Chris Columbus acquired the rights to the Anne Rice tome "Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt," which focuses on the 7-year-old Jesus and his return to Nazareth. In the course of the story Christ discovers the truth about his birth and defines his life purpose.According to John A. Murray, an academic who has studied this realm, Hollywood's forays into religion have been bountiful financially but also have had a major cultural impact around the world, introducing millions to Christianity. DeMille's "King of Kings" was viewed by some 800 million people by 1959, asserts Murray. As a silent film, "Kings" was useful to Protestant and Catholic missionaries in selling the gospel in non-English speaking territories.Even a flop like the Warner Bros. film, "Jesus," in 1979, was ultimately translated into 1,000 languages, making it perhaps "the most watched film in history." (Missionaries tabbed it lovingly "the Jesus film.")While "The Greatest Story Ever Told" remains the most famous Hollywood film in this genre, Mel Gibson's effusion, "The Passion of the Christ," was surely the most profitable (it grossed more than $500 million worldwide). To be sure, "Ben Hur" performed mightily as well thanks in part to Charlton Heston playing Judah Ben Hur (the movie related Jesus' birth, ministry and death but didn't have time for his resurrection.)DeMille always reiterated that his films were simply "translations of the Bible to another medium," thus overlooking the reality that the words of the Bible are themselves subject to varying interpretation. Writing in the NY Times, Nicholas D. Kristof noted recently that the Bible offers contradictory positions on such issues as homosexuality, divorce and even the naughty behavior of the people of Sodom.Mark 10 envisions a lifelong marriage of one man and one woman, but King Solomon gloried in his 700 wives, and still other references suggest that the most practical approach for men was to remain stolidly celibate. Rather than obsessing about homosexuality, Kristof points out, "early commentators were very concerned about sex with angels as an incorrect mixing of two kinds."Every ideologue supplies his own Biblical references. Tony Perkins, head of the right-wing Family Research Council, pointed out recently that Christ would have condemned the "Occupy" movement because the Bible establishes Jesus as a "free marketer." (So much for God's approval of the 99%.)I'm pleased that a healthy reciprocity exists between Hollywood and Christ. Even as Hollywood has spread the word, Christ has helped spread the wealth. This puts me in a much cheerier mood as I sign my Christmas cards.Column Calendar: Monday: Peter Bart Tuesday: Peter Caranicas/Cynthia Littleton wednesday: Brian Lowry Thursday: Andrew Barker/David S. AFTRA, record labels reach deal

The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists has reached a tentative three-year deal with the record labels, two weeks before the expiration of the current contract.AFTRA made the announcement Thursday and said it had achieved an increase in base rates of 2% annually, as well as its key objective of increasing employer contributions to the AFTRA Health and Retirement Funds.Negotiations between the union and the record labels resumed this week -- more than two months after those talks broke down. The Sound Recordings Code generates more than $140 million in annual earnings for AFTRA members. It covers singers, royalty and non-royalty artists, as well as announcers, actors, comedians, narrators and sound effects artists who work on recordings in all new and traditional media and all music formats, in addition to audiobooks, comedy albums and cast albums. The current contract was negotiated in 2007 with a June 2010 expiration but the pact was subsequently extended by 18 months to the Dec. 31 expiration.AFTRA National Executive Director Kim Roberts Hedgpeth, who served as chief negotiator, said in a statement, "The working members of this negotiating committee confronted unique challenges in this negotiation due to the structural changes, threats from content theft and sharp economic declines the recording business has experienced during the past decade, which are beyond anything experienced by our members working in other entertainment and media sectors.""The AFTRA members on the negotiating committee nonetheless succeeded in achieving critically needed increases in minimums and H&R contributions, and further bargained payment structures for digital revenue and new forms of licensing that will enable performers to better participate in evolving business structures as the recorded music industry attempts to adapt to change," she added. The tentative agreement will be submitted to the national board for approval and then for ratification by members. AFTRA said details on the ratification process will be announced shortly after the new year.AFTRA said highlights of the contract, which will run retroactively from Jan. 1, 2012 to Dec. 31, 2014, include:-- Increase in base rates of 2% each year of the contract-- Increase in the employer health and retirement contribution rate on royalty income by 1% over the life of the agreement-- maintained required special employer contributions which guarantee health insurance benefits for royalty artists on the current "roster" of a label, by increasing the maximum on employer contributions from $5,000 to $6,500 per year-- improved and expanded performers' base of participation in revenue from sale of digital downloads-- established a new structure of revenue-based payments for new areas of low budget licenses and licenses for non-traditional usages, such as re-use of recordings in novelty consumer products.AFTRA said an all-day session in NY ran late Wednesday, followed by tentative agreement being reached Thursday morning. Negotiations between AFTRA and representatives from UMG, Sony, Warner, EMI and Disney labels began Aug. 15, with an additional round of bargaining held in Los Angeles the week of Sept. 12-16 and in NY on Oct. 5. Lysistrata Jones: Theater Review

Getty ImagesMichelle Williams, left, and Tilda Swinton With the Screen Actors Guild Awards announced Wednesday and airing Jan. 29, this makes the SAGs the group and show with the longest nominations out in the press. And how does this shake up the red carpet picture? Well, for one thing, there are going to be a lot of Bridesmaids who need dresses! And Kristin Wiig and Melissa McCarthy have now moved up to A-list status, so they will be getting some major dresses offered and made for them.our editor recommendsSAG Awards TV: 'Modern Family' Leads Nominations, 'Homeland' SnubbedSAG Awards: 'Suits' Star Patrick Adams Reacts to Shocking Nomination, Talks 'Friday Night Lights' ExperienceSAG Awards: Jon Cryer on His First Nomination: 'I Had No Reason Whatsoever to Expect I Would Be Included'SAG Awards Nominations: The Complete ListSAG Awards Nominations: The Nominees' ReactionsSAG Awards: The Nominees The ladies of The Help will also have their pick of the designer litter -- not that Emma Stone hasn't had first dibs on dresses from next season from Europe, but now Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer will be joining her in that "we'd LOVE to make you a dress or three" category. Though Davis, Spencer and Chastain are not your average actress size 2's, they won't be hurting for major designer offers. Chastain was recently seen wearing Viktor & Rolf spring 2012 and Louis Vuitton spring 2012 -- both looks that are very hard to procure. This could be the year of the Large Sexy Gown: Both Spencer and McCarthy are glamazons who love to dress up and plenty of designers will be on board to help them in their quests. COMPLETE LIST: 2012 SAG Awards TV and Film Nominees Glenn Close is an Armani loyalist, and Meryl Streep tends to wear very simple things, so not much curiousity there. Tilda Swinton and Michelle Williams will be the fashion gets for designers at the SAGs -- both nominated for best actress, and both with definitively chic and quasi surprising styles. Will Williams wear Chanel couture (which shows before the SAGs air in Paris in January)? She is one of the few whom the house would consider. Will Swinton have her Euro designer friends Haider Ackermann or Raf Simmons (now at Jil Sander, said to be jumping ship to Dior) or Viktor & Rolf make her an avant-garde gorgeous gown or tux -- or will she got with lower-key Prada, which she also wears? PHOTOS: SAG Awards Nominees And in the supporting category, we can be sure that Berenice Bejo from The Artist, nominated for best supporting actress, will get some fashion love -- though somehow we doubt she'll be wearing any of the 1920s looks from the spring collections of Gucci or Marc Jacobs. But it would be wild if she did! Somehow we expect she will go with what is chic and French, representing her country. When it comes to the SAG TV noms, Kate Winslet, Juliana Margulies, Tina Fey, Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara will all have many designer options -- with Winslet getting the most, of course. But Margulies always looks amazing at any awards show. STORY:'The Help' Leads Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations Kelly McDonald and Aleksa Palladino of Boardwalk Empire will also get good looks -- if they hire good stylists. That's key here. Because after the Critics Choice Awards and the Globes (both early and mid-January), it takes a savvy stylist to get designers to part with the really great dresses they might be holding back for the Oscars. And only Williams or Swinton could score couture for the SAGs -- maybe. We're sad Kirsten Dunst isn't going, but there are more nominations to be had. Alongside Robin WrightGiven that the film bears the title The Grandmothers, you might be forgiven for assuming that it's a quiet drama about old biddies pottering about, clucking over their cats or doing some knitting. For making his situation, he pointed to some "very lucrative" CBS show like Blue Bloods, that they stated CBS sells with different 25 to 54 demo or in some instances total audiences. What he'd enjoy having much more of, obviously, is sports. But with no sub costs that the cable rival like ESPN can derive, he sees that there's slim possibility of that happening -- despite the $250 million retransmission costs likely to are available in within the next year. "ESPN includes a perfect model," he stated. "They compensated $1.7 billion for just one game per week,18 to 19 games annually. That's lots of money.Inch Try because he might, the CBS honcho could not sit on stage to have an hour without having to be hurled a couple of Charlie Sheen questions, that they handled to dodge with a number of quips. "One factor you realize from finding yourself in e-commerce as lengthy when i have is shit happens," he stated, adding: "It had been unfortunate... I am glad it's a chapter that's closed. It simply wasn't fun. It's really no good when there's rancor it's really no good if you have lawyers involved with a Television show.Inch Trying to change focus, he shined up on concerning the show's recent rankings --up from this past year, without early days-- and adding Ashton Kutcher, who he was highly complimentary of "apart from his comments about Penn Condition." Moonves, a self-referred to "TV guy," didn't have exactly the same enthusiasm for his film division, that has battled to obtain off the floor. "I do not think it had been the incorrect strategy It was the incorrect films," he stated, mentioning to the concentrate on mid-budget fare. He added from the five films, three which he states broke even: "They are not movies that I am happy with... not one of them will be nominated for Oscars." The CBS chief was similarly realistic concerning the condition from the network's little-viewed morning show, which introduced another anchor shakeup the 2009 week. "To perform a poor imitation from the Today show or [Hello America] isn't what you want, so they are going to behave different," he states of the potentially very lucrative day-part. For the evening news division, Moonves is happy with Scott Pelley's evening newscast, that has seen its rankings rise like a smartly harder bend inside a publish Katie Couric era. It will receive a little technical, but Warner Bros Television Group and ABC may have cracked the code to resolve one of the TV industry’s more vexing problems: How should program producers and systems split the rights to air Tv shows asdigital platforms be considered a bigger part of the distribution mix? They introduced today atwo-year deal that delivers ABC bigger and clearer options to use WBTVG shows once they’re hot: ABC can include the shows in the TV Everywhere, subscription-based online feed in the network the companies need to have to say is “currently under development.” The network also provides to constitute to five recently broadcast cases of current WBTVG programs — like the Middle, Push The Button, and Suburgatory – available via VOD as soon as the following day of they first show on TV. They could work on the network’s primary Websites, abc.com and Hulu, along with an ABC-high quality VOD service moved by traditional pay TV entrepreneurs. As a swap, WBTVG can begin syndicating series earlier than previous deals allowed: It might license serialized shows for instance Gossip Women that actually focus on subscription VOD services like Netflix within the finish in the broadcast year in which the episodes first air. The studio could also begin syndicating sitcoms and procedural dramas to Tv producers and cable systems after three years, lower from four. Since WBTV might be the greatest independent TV producer, “this is kind of an amount,” states EVP Craig Hunegs. “I don’t think there’s any returning using this.” He adds that WBTVG is close to finishing the same, but longer, deal with another network.

Anne Hathaway Birthday: Actress Turns 29; Celebrate Her Best Onscreen Moment

On Nov. 12, 1982, Anne Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, NY. 29 years later, she's best known as a princess with a diary, Catwoman, an Oscar nominee, and even Oscar host. Not bad for a girl who got her start in a 1997 real estate commercial. In celebration of Ms. Hathaway's happy day, let's remember her finest onscreen moment. You can keep the 'Rachel Getting Marrieds' and 'Brokeback Mountains'; for my money, Hathaway was never better in 'The Devil Wears Prada,' going perfectly-heeled toe to perfectly-heeled toe against Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt (both in delightful scenery-chewing performances). Hathaway even gets a ridiculous heroine entrance in the film, as evidenced from the above clip. Not bad! What's your favorite Hathaway moment? Sound off below! Godspell

A Ken Davenport, Hunter Arnold, Broadway Across America, Luigi Caiola, Rose Caiola, Edgar Lansbury, Mike McClernon, Tolchin Family, Guillermo Wiechers & Juan Torres and People of Godspell presentation of a musical in two acts with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz; conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak. Directed by Daniel Goldstein, choreographed by Christopher Gattelli. Music direction, Charlie Alterman. JesusHunter Parrish John/JudasWallace SmithHere comes the first-ever Broadway revival of "Godspell," and understandably so. The 1971 Off Broadway hit enjoyed a strong five-year run, after which it moved to Broadway for an additional year. But the feel-good "Day by Day" tuner was always more Off Broadway than on; dress it up in $5 million togs and it still feels slight. Boomer nostalgia and modern-day marketing might alleviate this, but that's not the main problem. In attempting to bring this anachronistic telling of the age-old gospel up to date, "Godspell" uncomfortably straddles two eras and two styles. Modernized revisions of ancient tales have been amusing audiences for more than a century. You could certainly take something like the Greatest Story Ever Told and add contemporary songs, up-to-the-minute gags, both the Chicken Dance and the Macarena, and jokes about Lindsay Lohan or about Steve Jobs using an iPad in Heaven. But such a new musical, written today, would certainly not be filled with songs of the soft rock variety; yesterday's cutting-edge score is way too comfortable for a 2011 protest piece. And yes, there's a joke about "Occupy 50th Street." A current-day "Godspell" would not feature a gang you'd have met on St. Mark's Place during the Nixon Years, wearing hippy-ish costumes. (Jesus no longer dons that Superman shirt; it makes an appearance, but is rejected.) What we get at Circle in the Square is a show and a sensibility which drift aimlessly between today and the dark ages of forty years ago. The authors, or rather whoever is in control, seem to have added each and every gag that comes to mind; good, relevant or not. There is even a line -- or perhaps merely an ad lib -- about how hard it is to get "Book of Mormon" tickets. This scattershot approach adds laughs but diminishes what could be the power of "Godspell." Director Daniel Goldstein makes his Broadway debut, and not impressively so. This long-in-gestation revival arose from his 2006 staging of the show at the Paper Mill Playhouse. On the plus side is the score by Stephen Schwartz (here credited for "music and new lyrics"). The songs are indeed comfortable and nostalgically sweet. Schwartz ("Wicked") did not get much respect for this show initially, but it is tuneful and effective. The new orchestrations by Michael Holland often try too hard to modernize the score; Schwartz doesn't need the help. Strongest aspect of the affair is the casting: This "Godspell" is especially well sung. Standing out are Lindsay Mendez (on "Bless the Lord" and elsewhere) and Telly Leung (on "All Good Gifts"). The one big letdown comes from Hunter Parrish, the Jesus of the occasion. Parrish has an innocent smile, big blonde hair, and plenty of teeth; he doesn't look like a Ken doll, exactly, but he sings like one. Wallace Smith, as John/Judas, is marginally stronger but not up to the level of the ensemble. One of the surprising bright spots is the entr'acte reprise of "Learn Your Lessons Well," sung by Leung (at piano) with Mendez and Smith. Yes, there is an audience for this "Godspell," and perhaps they can be reached. But the strengths of the original have been so weighted down by mirthless improvements that it makes for a very long two hours.Sets, David Korins; costumes, Miranda Hoffman; lights, David Weiner; sound, Andrew Keister; orchestrations and vocal arrangements, Michael Holland; production stage manager, David O'Brien. Opened Nov. 7, 2011, reviewed Nov. 4. Welsford states Lambert got taken proper care of his work, agreed the fabric might be "works created for hire," which Welsford may have the legal right to use his title, nickname and biography concerning the marketing and advertising the tracks. The business states it spent greater than $200,000 to produce the tracks and advanced money to Lambert so he may make his bills in those days. Weekend Movie Preview: 'Harold and Kumar' Try to Smoke Out 'Tower Heist'

The first weekend of November has arrived, meaning that not only is Thanksgiving around the corner (yikes), but so are this year's major holiday season offerings. New Line kicks things off early with 'A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas,' which should do well -- but not nearly as well as 'Tower Heist.' To the Preview! NATIONWIDE RELEASES 'Tower Heist' What's the story: After having their pensions swindled away by a Bernie Madoff-like investment banker, a group of jilted high-rise employees (led by Ben Stiller) team with a petty crook (Eddie Murphy) to rob the money back. Brett Ratner directs this glossy action comedy. Box-office projection: Early guesses on the 'Tower Heist' opening weekend feel a tad low -- the numbers range between $29 million and $33 million. Consider this, however: Ben Stiller has seen nine of his films in the past decade open with more than $25 million; Murphy, despite his publicized and horrendous bombs, is still a box office draw too. Combining those two stars with an action-heavy premise, PG-13 rating, and the fact that nothing Hollywood might consider "four quadrant" has hit theaters since the summertime, and 'Tower Heist' could -- preemptive groan -- steal more money than you think. $45 million might be out of reach, but couldn't it hit $40 million? $40.7 million [Showtimes & Tickets | Mr. Moviefone's Six-Second Review] 'A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas 3D' What's the story: Estranged best buds (seriously, groan) Harold and Kumar (John Cho and Kal Penn) reunite to replace a burned Christmas tree before Harold's father-in-law (Danny Trejo) gets back from Midnight Mass. Box-office projection: It's Christmas in November! The first 'Harold and Kumar' opened with $5.5 million before becoming a cult hit; the second capitalized on that cult -- and its spring release date -- with $14.9 million. Will the third film split the difference and land in the neighborhood of $10 million? Perhaps, though don't be surprised if 'Christmas' grosses a bit more because of its extra dimension. Audiences seem to hate 3D at this point -- especially for non-event movies -- but since 'A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas' pokes fun at the excess, it could be a drawing card. $12.6 million [Showtimes & Tickets | Mr. Moviefone's Six-Second Review] LIMITED RELEASES Not much on the indie front. The badly-titled 'Son of No One' featuring Channing Tatum and Tracy Morgan gets released, as does the documentary 'Charlotte Rampling: The Look.' Bret Baier On October 7, 1996, the "on" switch was tossed in the Fox News Funnel - and also the TV news world has not been exactly the same since. A 1-hour special, Fox News Funnel - fifteen years - Fair and Balanced (Friday, 10pm/ET Saturday, 10pm/ET and Sunday, 3pm/ET), will reflect increasing from the cable news rankings leader. One of the Fox News veterans searching back is Special Report anchor Bret Baier, who opened up the channel's Atlanta bureau in the apartment with only a fax machine along with a mobile phone in FNC's beginning. The Biz lately spoken with Baier, who grew to become anchor of Special Report last year, concerning the anniversary, the channel's experts and the emergence because the face of Fox News within the Beltway. TV Guide Magazine: Glenn Beck was providing you with an enormous audience lead-in, however the rankings for Special Report have organized since he left this summer time. Why do you consider it's become a scheduled appointment program?Baier: Lots of which has related to the confirming that we are doing. News sells within this atmosphere. It's like consuming from the fire hose. It's being released of Washington fast with many different stuff that are affecting us citizens directly. TV Guide Magazine: Numerous Fox News on-air anchors happen to be there because the launch. Exactly why is there such durability and loyalty?Baier: There's a household aspect into it. The organization really takes proper care of people should you undergo trouble. [Fox News chairman] Roger Ailes was among the first people I received a phone call from the time my boy was identified with heart problems and needed to get into surgery. That's one reason. Two is, even if we grew to become number 1, we'd the scrappy start-up attitude that unified folks right from the start. When you are number 1, you belong to fire a great deal, and that we have. Which unifies folks, particularly when you think within the newspaper items that we are doing. TV Guide Magazine: You will find still experts who take a look at Fox News being an outlet that suits conservative audiences and political figures. You've got a status for playing it lower the center, and you have been available protecting the network's newspaper integrity to individuals like Jon Stewart. How can you experience needing to do this?Baier: In my opinion within the place Sometimes. I believe Roger Ailes produced an incredible network. I concentrate on my show everyday. I understand what we should do in Washington and just how we attempt to pay for things. I am comfortable speaking relating to this network which show every single day. I believe people acknowledge that there's a noticeable difference between opinion programming and news shows. The greatest experts of Fox are often individuals who haven't viewed it. And I only say, watch my show for 3 days. Watch Shepard Smith's show, The Fox Report, for 3 days. After which return in my experience and let me know that which you think about it. And also the loudest experts would return and say, well I believe which was covered pretty fairly. TV Guide Magazine: The "Fox All-Stars" panel segment in your program frequently has two conservatives (Charles Krauthammer and Stephen Hayes) and something liberal or neutral commentator. It will appear just like a pile-on some nights.Baier: I have heard that critique. I believe our panel does a great job of talking about subjects not from an ideological perspective constantly but from understanding of Washington. [They] can articulate where each side are. The analytical part of the panel helps people visit the water cooler and say, 'This is exactly what each side say and this is exactly what I believe.A I recieve the critique. We attempt to locate left-leaning columnists and luminaries. It is a challenge sometimes. We are attempting to change things up. TV Guide Magazine: Why do challenging? Can there be resistance?Baier: No. Many people have contracts at other areas. Other medication is simply not into doing TV. It's a variety of things. Daily, we attempt to supply balance on that panel. TV Guide Magazine: The late evening comedy clip in the finish of the program is definitely very funny. Who picks it?Baier: It's me. I've somebody that is known as the kicker person around the staff. It's really a higher-pressure job. That guy or lady needs to undergo all of the clips and they've to create a presentation in my experience at around three o'clock. TV Guide Magazine: You are on Twitter a great deal. Are you currently delivering your own tweets?Baier: I'm. I put aside around an hour each day to complete social networking. However it happens during the day. My spouse wishes it did not happen around it will. TV Guide Magazine: Employment requirement now?Baier: It's the new reality. People feel more connected when they be aware of guy who's a slave to together within the family room every evening can from time to time answer their tweet. TV Guide Magazine: Earlier you pointed out your boy. How's he doing?Baier: He's fantastic. He's four. He's growing just like a weed. He's amusing. We now have more challenges ahead. He'll have another open-heart surgery each year or two and something most likely when he's in the teenaged years. It certainly is at the back of our minds. Has there been a more unexpected franchise hit then the 'Fast and the Furious' films? Your Dream for Charge of SAG's New You are able to Division Wasn't A Fight

These were said to be minimal exciting Screen Stars Guild elections in recent memory. Guild leader Ken Howardriding a wave of support for efforts to merge SAG and also the American Federation of Television and Radio Artistsfaced no serious competitors in the bid for re-election. His political partner, Amy Aquino, would run unopposed for any second term as secretary-treasurer. MembershipFirstthe Hollywood faction typically skeptical of merger and locked going back couple of years inside a political have a problem with Howard and Aquino's Unite for Strength partydeclined to endorse a slate of candidates for officer and board of director positions. In NY, the professional-merger group U . s . Screen Stars Countrywide would without doubt, because it had for over a decade, still dominate. Then your finish of This summer came, with it something unpredicted. A brand new political faction calling itself One Strong Union emerged, announcing its need to change things as they are, affect the direction of merger talks, and area a slate of 10 board candidates. The surprise was in which the unrest appeared: NY.USAN, brought by incumbent division leader Mike Hodge, saw challenges beforemost lately last year, when several stars based on MembershipFirst went for board of company directors but unsuccessful to secure any seats. But it was different. One Strong Union was made up of stars who had formerly been aligned with USAN and was backed by a number of gamers in union politics. Boasting endorsements from Holter Graham, leader of AFTRA's NY local former SAG leader Melissa Gilbert and some of the stars who assisted found USAN at about the time from the 2000 advertisements strike, One Strong Union looked to become a rival with teeth. But looks were misleading. When election results arrived Sept. 22, Howard won not surprisingly, Unite for Strength made gains both in the nation's and Hollywood conference rooms, and USAN did what it really usually does. From the five national board seats available in NY, just one visited an OSU candidate. That publish was won by Mike Robards, who had been not successful, however, in the bid to unseat Hodge as leader. All 11 USAN candidates won division board seats, using the remaining three likely to One Strong Union. No revolution happened. But fault lines within SAG's political establishment were revealed.U . s . Front Howard, Aquino, and people from the Hollywood-based Unite for Strength were vocal within their support for Hodge and USAN throughout the campaign. "Mike Hodge won't lose," Howard candidly told Back Stage just days prior to the election's finish. Aquino, speaking around the evening that outcome was introduced, construed USAN's electoral success being an endorsement from the guild's Hollywood and national leadership too.InchWe have been working together within the last year . 5,Inch Aquino stated. "Therefore it is very satisfying to determine that both people in NY and La are pleased with what are you doing and would like it to continue."What are you doing, obviously, may be the movement to merge SAG and AFTRA. Merger continues to be the standard dividing line between SAG political factions. That which was interested in One Strong Union's challenge could be that the group was made up of stars who support merger, and endorsement of merger with AFTRA was a part of OSU's platform. The audience also expressed support for Howard and Aquino, despite the fact that both candidates campaigned for USAN.With One Strong Union's stance around the most pressing problem facing SAG sounding almost indistinguishable from the rival's (the merger part of OSU's campaign mailer was unique just for its insistence that the final merger plan likewise incorporate particulars on mixing the 2 unions' pension and health programs), the audience centered on the procedure.InchI'd just state that we now have different perspectives, different approaches," Robards told Back Stage in August. "The primary factor is the fact that who's chosen towards the board may have an effect around the shape and the prosperity of the merger effort." Robards didn't react to a request to become questioned with this article.Aftermath With Robards getting lost to Hodge with a margin of nearly two to 1, those who goes onto shape merger is going to be individuals who're already doing this. The SAG and AFTRA merger committees have mandates using their particular boards of company directors to provide a proper plan by The month of january, along with a membership election of the routine might be performed by next summer time."We're heavily involved with conferences and conversations with AFTRA and dealing through specific particulars," Hodge stated. "We're mandatedand I place the focus on 'mandated'to bring the program prior to the board in The month of january."Hodge wouldn't talk to this content from the merger conferences so far. He did, however, address accusations of partiality and insufficient transparency he stated were produced by his competitors, particularly concerning the positioning of board people around the merger committee. Hodge defended the choices produced in committee positioning, observing he along with other leaders offered possibilities to 2 of his One Strong Union competitors to operate on merger subgroups. One board member, requested just before ballots being mailed, never responded. Another, requested throughout the election, recognized. "We have never done anything apart from to try and be fair and open with anybody within the boardroom," Hodge stated.Phoebe Jonas is just one of three OSU people to win a division board chair in NY. She was among the only group people to possess no prior experience around the board, but she stated the group created to deal with what she known as "deficiencies in inclusivity and deficiencies in transparency" within the NY board's proceedings."I saw that there have been very qualified people, board people, who have been experts inside a certain venue, whether it is new media or emerging technology, who have been not placed on certain committees," she stated. "When that individual or persons remain off or omitted, this is when my own little Phoebe alarm begins to visit off."Now Jonas is going to be among the only people around the NY board to possess challenged the institution's leadership. But she stated she's positive concerning the future: "My feeling is what's done is performed we now have work to complete. I understand personally that I am not really happy moving in there if there is a combative attitude. That isn't things i intend to bring. And That I truly don't think that is what other people intends to bring. So I am excited."Hodge established that jobs are already being carried out to smooth relations between your two factions. He confirmed that he'll be meeting informally with Robards to go over the concerns that brought towards the campaign challenge: "Mike Robards was gracious enough, and that i absolutely be thankful, to transmit us a congratulatory note on Thursday evening."Using the division presidency guaranteed and the party still firmly in charge from the boardroom, Hodge will once more maintain the positioning to create leadership decisionsand to attract fire from individuals displeased with individuals choices. He stated that he doesn't plan to change his approach."I don't have confidence in being punitive," he stated. "I do not believe that it serves an objective. I believe as lengthy while you show a great-belief effort for the job at hands, only then do we can move ahead. If there's some type of behavior that's targeted at undercutting or undermining, yes, I must react to that. I'd not think about that to be punitive. I'd think about that to be responsive."

What's Your Number?

Chris Evans and Anna Faris star in "What's Your Number?" A last century Fox relieve a Regency Companies presentation from the New Regency/Contrafilm production. Produced by Love Flynn, Tripp Vinson. Executive producers, Arnon Milchan, Anna Faris, Nan Morales. Directed by Mark Mylod. Script, Gabrielle Allan, Jennifer Crittenden, good book "20 Occasions a girlInch by Karyn Bosnak.Ally Darling - Anna Faris Colin Shea - Chris Evans Daisy Darling - Ari Graynor Mike Adams - Dork Annable Roger the Boss - Joel McHale Mr. Darling - Erection dysfunction Begley Junior. Ava Darling - Blythe DannerIt's never an excellent sign when the funniest line within your romantic comedy is, "Have put forth the Holocaust museum?" and contains nothing associated with the comfort in the movie. Such might be the problem with "What's Your Number?," a draggy, generally laugh-free outing that wastes a superbly good Anna Faris, here playing a spacy sexpot who decides, after you have rested with 20 different males, it's probably time to settle lower. With Chris Evans cast becoming an all-too-apparent Mr. Right, this inane I'll-never-be-slutty-again farce should publish OK theatrical and homevid amounts for Fox. Cast off by her latest fling (Zachary Quinto) about a few minutes following a opening credits, Ally Darling (Faris) can be a boozy Boston blonde whose dating standards have walked under her neck-line. When she reads a novel article about how precisely the normal American lady has 10.5 fanatics over her lifetime, Ally realizes she's rested with nearly two occasions that number which is vulnerable to making herself unmarriageable. That she's recently lost her job and contains no apparent interests beyond making clay-figurine dioramas doesn't improve her prospects. Fixing to avoid kidding around and uncover a husband, Ally decides to locate details about her ex-males, one at a time, expecting restarting a vintage flame without raising her number to 21. Helping her having a couple of detective tasks are her neighbor Colin (Evans), a laid-back guitarist and serial womanizer who's clearly hot for Ally themselves, though she's careful about hooking up tabs on someone a lot more whorish than she's. So begins numerous mirthless wild-goose chases as Colin helps Ally stalk her exes nationwide. One of these simple (Chris Pratt) seems to own shed a few hundred pounds which is now engaged with a sexy engineer another (Anthony Mackie) asks her to marry him for your least romantic possible reasons. She steers apparent in the more nightmarish suitors, that are banished to flashbacks. Ally's clearly wasting her time, as well as the viewer may fully feel likewise. Unable to construct or sustain comic situations, Gabrielle Allan and Jennifer Crittenden's script (modified from Karyn Bosnak's novel "20 Occasions a girlInch) they turn to jokes so random and context-free they almost become qualified as non sequiturs, cueing audiences to laugh whenever a little player calculates to become compulsive finger-sniffer or when Ally's hair catches fire for pointless. Less vulgar well as over-the-top than the usual couple of from the year's other R-rated comedies, "Number" riffs round the issues of promiscuity in order to a predictably safe, sweet, professional-commitment happy ending. Audiences could possibly get their fill of coy near-nudity and genital-centric one-card inserts, but no sophistication or honesty about gender-based double standards they might reasonably expect from this kind of scenario. Pic does bear a vague resemblance to recent summer season hit "Bridesmaids" in the way it uses an approaching wedding (individuals of Ally's sister, nicely carried out by Ari Graynor) to pay attention to only one gal's early-middle age funk, nonetheless its portrait of distaff distress is nowhere near to informative or funny. A great comic actress whose talents are actually better displayed elsewhere, Faris works little of her usual miracle here, largely because the film essentially shares Ally's dim opinion of herself. There's not a secret-weapon intelligence or killer timing behind Faris' ditzy veneer this time around around she's really just playing a dumb blonde who can't hold her liquor. Evans' nice smile and muscles get the job done, and Blythe Danner and Erection dysfunction Begley Junior. submit OK turns as Ally's divorced parents. Glossily helmed by Mark Mylod ("Ali G Indahouse") and full of tiresome pop-slathered montages, "Number" also teems with references to Facebook which should show how up-to-the-minute the film is, and frequently will hold the effect of dating it instantly.Camera (color, Luxurious prints), J.
